Field of knowledge: Marine macroalgae FAPESP process: 2016/06931-4 Project title: Biodiversity of marine algae and metabolites of economical impact Working area: Biological oceanography Principal investigator: Pio Colepicolo Unit/Instituition: University of São Paulo Deadline for submissions: June 12th, 2017 Locale: Chemistry Institute, Biochemistry Department Post-doctoral Fellowships Available in Biodiversity of Marine Algae and Metabolites of Economical Impact There are three postdoctoral fellowship positions available at the Chemistry Institute of University of Sao Paulo (USP). The USP Chemistry Institute stands out in Brazil as one of the toppest institutes dedicated to science and education. USP is ranked as the best university in Brazil, and it is also in the South America's top position according to the QS World University by Subject Rankings.
The Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Algae headed by Dr. Pio Colepicolo (PD supervisor) focuses on discovering new bioactive compound and developing protocols for better use of seaweed’s biomasses within a bioeconomy context. The liquid and gas chromatographers coupled to mass spectrometers (LC-MS and GC-MS), nuclear magnetic ressonance (NMR), supercritical fluid extractor and molecular biology are tools to accomplish the aforementioned aims. The projects will involve the following research focuses:
#1 Postdoctoral Position (24 months project):
Bioprospection of natural products from seaweed for the control of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease.
The qualifications recquired for this position are: (i) must have a PhD degree within the subjects Toxicology and Toxicological Analysis or Chemistry of Natural Products; (ii) must have experience on classical and molecular taxonomy of seaweeds; (iii) to be an advanced user of NMR; and (iv) to be familiarized with GC-MS and LC-MS.
#2 Postdoctoral Position (24 months project):
Metabolic profiling of seaweeds from Gracilaria gender under different growth conditions.
The qualifications recquired for this position are: (i) must have a PhD degree within the subjects Plant Physiology or Biochemistry; (ii) must have experience on metabolomics of algae; (iii) to be an advanced user of LC-MS and GC-MS; and (iv) to have good statistical background (preferably on multivariative analyses) and experience with appropriate software.
#3 Postdoctoral Position (12 months project):
Production of biofuel from marine macroalgae within a biorefinery context.
The qualifications recquired for this position are: (i) must have a PhD degree within the subjects Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Plant Physiology; (ii) must have experience on classical taxonomy of seaweeds; (iii) must have experience on chemical hydrolysis of biomass; (iv) to be familiarized with GC-MS, LC-MS and LC coulped to Diode Array Detector; (v) to have good statistical background (preferably on factor analyses) and experience with appropriate software.
According to the São Paulo Foundation Agency (FAPESP) rules, (i) the candidate should have concluded a doctorate less than seven years before the beginning of the PD fellowship; (ii) the fellowship demands full time dedication to the research project; and (iii) the fellowship holder may not hold any formal or informal employment nor receive, during the term of the fellowship, a fellowship from another entity, salary or remuneration deriving from the exercise of activities of whatever nature.
Further information regarding all the Candidates’ obligations are available on: http://fapesp.br/en/postdoc.
Scholarship Grant: R$ 81, 831.60/year (app. US$ 25, 600.00/year) (from April 1st, 2016) plus Research Contingency Funds (15% of the annual value of the fellowship).
